Tragedy Back Home

Yesterday my wife and I were glued to the TV watching Al Jazeera covering the tragedy unfolding close to Bahrain shores. It was a sad day for all of us. Our condolences go to all the families who lost a loved one. It is still not clear how the dhow tuned upside down in a matter of few seconds in a calm sea trapping victims underneath. We hope for an honest investigation to punish whoever is responsible.

A Beautiful Orchid


Cerebral Waste asked me what kind of orchid I have indoor, well it is the white kind with yellowish center. I guess this is my final answer, but since I still can call a friend, I ask back what kind is it?

The spring brought with it 9 inches of snow to my driveway. My son, Ali, is posting for photo op. following that I took over snow thrower! However, I had two other signs of spring; a beautiful indoor orchid blossomed and a phone call to my mother on her day.

الديه من السبعينات الى الثمانينات

كان اسمه حجي أحمد ولكنه لم يقنع بالاسم رغم جماله وجمال مايعنيه, فقد كان يرى فيه نقصا ما يقلقه. ولم يطول الامر طويلا فقدم في المحكمة قضية لتغير أسمه الى محمد علي. حيث وجد ضالته في أسم يجمع النبوة والامامة ويوكد الارتباط والولاء. وأصبح بعد ان تعمم يعرف بالشيخ محمد علي. وكانت عمامته مختلفة عما أعتدنا عليه من العمائم, ففيها مايشبه الذيل يتدلى على الجانب الايسر لقدم او يزيد. وقد أثارت هذه الاضافة ردود تفاوتت بين عدم الاكتراث الى الاعتراض على التغيير في موضة العمامة. لكنه أوضح ان تلك القطعة المتدلية التي لايعرف أحدا لها أسما انما كانت هي الاصل والعودة اليها أحق.فبعد التدقيق والتمحيص والتفحيص وجد ان عمائم الائمة لها تلك الزائدة, والحق أولى أن يتبع. ومضت الايام والسنون وأدخل السجن بعد عودته من رحلة بارك فيها للامام الخميني أنتصار ثورته وقبع في السجن سنين ثلاث, لم يعرض فيها على محكمة ولم تقراء عليه لوائح الاتهام. وثلاث سنين كفت لنقاش أعتى الملحدين في السجن على طريقة "ياتقنعني يا أقنعك واحنا ويش ورانه..وهذا أحنا قاعدين", وزادت ليلزم نفسه بعدد من النذور التي لم تقدم ولن تؤخر في نشر الدعوة حال خروجه من السجن. وكان منها أن يتزوج باربع يعنه في نشر الرسالة وان يغير أسمه!!
أما في موضوع الزواج فقد تمكن من الزواج بواحدة أخرى, وبقيت أثنتان ليكتمل النذرلكنه لم يوفق في ذلك المسعى. وفي موضوع الاسم فأن ثلات سنين من التأمل أوصلته مجددا الى نقص لم يلتفت اليه في التغيير الاول! فلم يعد الاسم وافيا حيث انه لم يجمع الا النبي(صلعم) والوصي فماذا عن بقية الائمة الكرام؟ ومن هنا جاء الأسم الجديد مركبا: محمد علي جعفرمهدي يليه أسم الأب والعائلة!
فهذا الأسم يجمع البدء والنصف والخاتمة.
وكما هو الحال في النذر الأول فان الامر لم يكن ميسرا, فبعد اعتراض القاضي على طول الأسم الأول مما تضيق به صفحة الجواز التفت الجميع أنه لا يوجد جواز أصلاً! فهو لا يزال محجوزا ولم يطلق سراحه بعد!!!

الديه: أوائل الثمانينات

مضت ستة أشهر على أطلاق سراح الشيخ محمد علي العكري بعد ثلاث سنوات قضاها دون محكمة أو تهمة. وكان جوازه لا زال محتجزا. ولم يحرك الشيخ ساكنا لاسترداده. وهنا زاره أحد أعيان القرية ناصحا

ليش ماتروح للجماعة وتكتب رسالة وتطلب الجواز.. اللي قبلك عطوهم الجواز-

الديه: منتصف السبعينات

أعتلى الشيخ محمد علي العكري المنبر في مأتم الديه الكبير, وبعد المعتاد من الصلاة والسلام على محمد واله والتذكير بمصيبة الامام الحسين, أنطلق في حديث طويل عن الالحاد الذي يشغل جل تفكيره. كيف يلحد الانسان, أي أنسان, وهو يرى قدرة الله في نفسه وفي كل ما حوله. وتطرق الى حوار شبيه بالاتجاه المعاكس جرى بينه وبين هندي لايؤمن بالله.
فقلت الى الهندي لماذا لا تؤمن بالله
فقال لي الهندي ان الله غير موجود

ALLTHAT JAZZ II: school version

Beautiful Music concert held tonight at Dimond High School. Over 300 students from elementary, middle and high school participated. It was time well spent. Hesham is seen her on the clarinet. Needless to say, He is the one with black hair. I hope the video quality would be better than ALL THAT JAZZ posted by blogs godfathr!

بداية 1995
كان الوضع متأزماً, الحركة في النهار طبيعية تماما, فيما عدا أثار المناوشات التي حدثت في الليلة السابقة. وعادة ما تكون تلك ظاهرة في بقايا أطار أحترق, أو أحجار وضعت وسط الشارع علها تعطل سيارة للامن. ولا يخلو الامر من كتابات جديدة ترى في البرلمان حلاً سحرياً!. و أذا تعقدت الامورنرى في الصباح التالي محلا تجارياً وقد أصبح رمادأ أو سيارة أحرقت اشتباها أو محول كهرباء بريء قد أسود لونه.
الجميع يذهب الي العمل صباحا ويسرع في شراء ما يحتاج بعد الظهر, فما ان تبداء الشمس بالغياب حتى يسرع الجميع الى بيوتهم فهناك حظر تجول لم يعلن, ويستمعون للبي بي سي و لاصوات السلندرات معلنة جولة جديدة. وبعض هذه الجولات تنتهي بمداهمات سمجة من الامن للبيوت التي اغلقت أبوابها في وقت مبكر.
أقتحمت طلقات المطاط زجاج نافذة المجلس دون مقاومة تذكر. ولأنة مطاط لابد له ان يفعل ما يفعله المطاط عادة, فاخذ يرتد ذهابا وأيابا في جدران المجلس الصغير. و أهل الدار لا يدرون أين يتجهون فمن الصعب أخد قرار يراعي فيزياء التصادم والارتداد لاكثر من جسم مطاطي يصتدم ويرتد في اّن واحد. وزاد ألامر تعقيدا مسيلة للدموع أستقرت وسط المجلس. وكأي عملية ماهرة لقوات تدخل سريع لم يصعب فيها الاقتحام, رفسة واحدة من بلوشستاني صنديد كانت كفيلة بفتح الباب على مصراعيه مرحبا بالقادمين. بدأت بعدها عملية ترفيس أنتصر فيها الامن من الجولة الاولى و تمكن فيها من سدح كل من في البيت من الذكور. وقد حاول هولاء أن يستسلموا قبل بدء الجولة, لكن هذا الخيار لم يكن على الطاولة!
بعد أن أنجلى بعض الغبار, أقتيد الصيد الثمين مكبلي الايدي و معصوبي الاعين في سيارات ألامن متجهين الي مركز شرطة الخميس لاستنطاقهم وكشف تفاصيل أدوارهم. وكانو ثلاثة أخوة مع زوج أختهم وابيهم.

تلقى بعض التعليمات..
_ بتروحون البيت الحين بس محتاجين لشوية تواقيع لزوم الاوراق الرسمية:

" وبعد أستئدان رجال الامن والسماح لهم بدخول البيت من قبل أصحابه, وبعد أن شرح رجال الامن "بكل أدب" احتياجهم لطرح بعض الاسئلة, لم يمانع أصحاب البيت من مصاحبة رجال الامن الى مركز الشرطة, حيث تبين عدم اطلاعهم بما يفيد التحقيق, وعليه فقد أغلق المحضر بتاريخ... التواقيع.."

وفي اليوم التالي وكالعادة راح أهالي الديه يتحدثون عن بقايا مناوشات الليلة الماضية, التي اضيفت اليها كدمات في ثلاثة أطباء و مهندس و متقاعد.. ورواية رسمية للحدث!

بعد العيد الوطني 1994
كانت الاشتباكات على أشدها بالقرب من الشارع العام, فالملثمون أقاموا حواجز وأحرقوا ماتيسر لهم من الاطارات تلاها كر وفر مع الامن. وكان ألامر قد تطور مؤخراً ألى ما هو أخطر بكثير مما أعتاده الشباب من مسيلات للدموع و مطاط. وكان صاحبنا واقف أمام باب بيته على مسافة أمنة. عندها مر به أحد الشباب وبعد السلام

Are you sure it was not eye infection?

When my son was 8 yrs old, I thought it would be a good idea to introduce different flavor with the bedtime story. I got series of prophits stories in arabic from Bahrain. I picked the story of prophet Yousif (Josef), as it is exciting one. I came to the part in which (Yacob) Jacob keeps crying for the loss of Yousif till he became blind;

- So, crying too much causes blindness!
- Well, mmm...
- Are you sure it was not eye infection?

Well, for sure I will skip the story of Jonah (Yonis) in the stomach of the whale!

Alaska Winter Special Olympics















Today I attended part of the Alaska special winter olympics. It was held in Hilltop sky area in Anchorage. There was so much joy and happiness at the award stand. A piture worths a thousands words and this picture says it all!
One kid gave a speach after receiving the gold medal " One way to get gold medal is be alone in your division".
Rosey Flitcher, Alaskan Bornze medalist in snowbording in the last winter olympics in Itlay handed trophies.
For me, I am still trying to figure which way to go skiing or snowboarding,or my be neither!. Needless to say I had few falls, nothing broken. I will be still in good shape for some table tennis tommorrow!

Alaska Table Tennis Top Player

My fascination with table tennis started like a love at first sight! Everybody else was playing football which is a game I like to watch but I actually suck at! So started playing on ready to collapse table in Daih club, with no team no coach and not even a descent racket. I used to buy the balls from nearby baker (الخباز ) and boil the dented ones! At age 15, I formed a team and I became a player and a coach. A year later I was selected for the national team. When I started college, I thought I had to choose, so I quit playing.
Six years later, I tried to get back to the game, but it was hard as I lost some grounds. So I switched to occasional recreational mode thinking that the spark has gone. I moved to USA 8 years ago, I made sure that my table tennis racket is still with me. Last summer I googled table tennis and Anchorage; to my surprise there was a table tennis club just next door. I cleaned up the dust and got new rubber and headed there. It turned out that the spark is still there and the passion is still flaming. 4 months later I won Alaska table tennis open championship. So don't give up on something you love.

Bold Eagles

Could not resist taking multiple pictures of this beautiful bird. Here you can see three adults and three juveniles. They were close the shore waiting for fishermen to fillet their catch to take of thr rest.
I wished I had more zoom as 10x does not really cut it!

A female bold eagle's wing is almost 8 feet and bound for bound is stronger than airplane wing! And they can strike their prey twice the force of a rifle bullet!
Isn't that amazing? No wonder why it as a symbol for strength and freedom.

Meet John, Mr. and Mrs. Doe

Moving to the US for training and work has its challenges. Linguistic and cultural are among those. A colleague of mine was on call for the pediatric intensive unit. He came to USA from Guatemala for training. He was called to the emergency room for trauma involving not yet identified kid. " We have her an 8 year old John Doe, with head injury and splenic laceration, non intubated, stable vitals, will need monitoring in the ICU" said the ER physician on the phone. By the time he got to ER the parents of the kid showed up
" Hi John.. Hi Mr. Doe..Mrs. Doe"
The kid gave him a weird look and both parents were looking at each other wondering.. Is our kid going to be treated by this idiot!

Again that was not me! it was a collegue from Guatemala..

What were you doing in the college?

I was taking care of sick premature baby in the neonatal intensive care. The parents were young African Americans. They came to visit the baby. But they looked some what stoned. They asked couple of questions then lift. A nurse came to me
- Did you smell that
- Smell what?
- That was marijuana
- I have no clue how this thing smells
- Really...What were you doing in the college?

The Last Great Race on Earth

The Iditarod, known as The Last Great Race on Earth, is not only a dog sled race, but a test of man/woman and dog against Alaska's rugged wilderness. It is the pride and joy of Alaska, and a tribute to its history race officially begins in Wasilla a day after the ceremonial start in Anchorage; Wasilla is roughly 40 miles north of Anchorage. From there, each musher and his or her dog team will travel over 1100 miles to the finish line in Nome. The terrain is brutal and the weather can be relentless, with subzero temperatures and whiteout conditions constantly testing the will and determination of each team.

The ceremonial start took place today in Anchorage. The race is the talk of the city. Roads are packed with people waving to sleds passing by. The race celebrates the history of the journey taken by dog sleds from Anchorage to Nome in 1925 to deliver much needed diphtheria serum to fight the epidemic.

I looked form a distance form the hospital window as sleds and dogs passed by and everybody waved.

Friendly Encounter

Moose frequently visit the city of Anchorage. I guess it gets really cold up in the mountains and they come to the neighborhood looking for some warmth and food. They can be huge in size and they are left alone to wonder in the city. You definitely don't want to hit one of these. They do block the traffic sometime as they always seem to have the green light. Literally there are hundreds of these animals wondering. They are not particularly friendly, so those are not the type that you would pet. However, the real one that you keep a distance from is the mother moose! So if you see her with her baby the smart thing to do is KEEP A WAY!
I have not tasted the moose yet, but those who did liked it. For obvious reasons, nobody is allowed to hunt them in the city. Hunting can be done in the woods and it is popular here. For those who are unlucky enough to kill a moose with their car, there is hard work ahead of them; they have to assume to role of the butcher and separate the meat which is taken then by authorities to be delivered to road kill charities. As that was not enough, they are also responsible for proper disposal of the remains. But one has to mention the good manners of our moose; unlike the moose wondering in Sweden, ours are sober! It turned out that in Sweden they have problem with drunken moose who misbehave. They get drunk from eating apples that get fermented under the snow. The moose is dumb to start with and I don't think he gets any smarter with the booze.
This particular moose was close to my house and he actually waited for me to get my camera form home! It is not a great picture as I had to use the zoom . This picture was taken today 6:30 pm
Encounter with the moose is usually a friendly compared to the other animal that sometime wonder in the city looking for the moose, THE BEAR!

في تعدد الزوجات والتبرع بالدم والاولويات

كان ذلك في عام 1989 حين قدم الالتهاب السحائي في قبلات الحجاج العائدين من مكة, ليفترسهم ويفترس أولادهم. وكنت في السنة السادسة في كلية الطب وقد أثرت البقاء في المستشفي لساعات أطول لمتابعة المرضى وهم يخوضون ما قد يكون أخر معركة. ولكثرة المرضى المصابين فقد أفرد لهم جناح خاص بالطابق الخامس وأخر لاولادهم في الطابق الثالث.
ومريضنا أدخل بشكل طارئ وفي وضع بالغ الخطورة . فقد تسببت العدوى في طفح جلدي انتشر على الجسم بأكمله, وحالة من الصدمة سببت فشلا لعدة اجهزة. وجاهد الاطباء لانقادحياته وبقى الاستشاري ساعات أضافية يحاول انقاد حياته. وكان أخو المريض قلقا لم يبرح مكانه في الممر وهو ينتظر ما قد يطمئنه على حالة أخيه. كان وضع المريض يزداد سؤاَ, ف اخر تحليل اكد انخفاضا كبيرا في الهيموجلوبين والصفائح واضطراب شديد في تخثر الدم. فقرر الاستشاري نقل للدم باسرع مايمكن. لكنه أراد للمريض ان يتلقى دماً طازجاً عله يصلح بعض ما أفسدته العدوى, وهنا تطوعت للحديث الى أخوه الذي يتلوى قلقاَ في الممر ليتبرع بالدم. وبعد مقدمة عن سؤ الوضع والحاجة للدم والدم الطازج بالتحديد, بدأ وكانه لم يصل الى ما أرمي اليه.

لا مانع.. أعطوه دم!-

• بنعطيه بس نبغيك تتبرع بالدم ل أخوك
  
• أعطوه من بنك الدم
  
• أخوك يحتاج دم طازج.. ونحتاجك تتبرع..أخوك حالته سيئة ويمكن يموت

تصورت ان ذكر الموت كفيل بحلحلة الوضع, فهو عادة ما يفعل.

• بودي اتبرع..لكن عندي ثلاث نسوان!!!!!!

لم يبق لدي ما أقوله, فلكل منا أولوياته. وللفحولة حسابات أخرى, و بثلاث نساء لعله يحتاج هو نفسه الى نقل دم.

بقى ان نقول ان المريض توفى بعد ساعات, ونقلنا الخبر الى الاخ المتلوي قلقاَ.

Beautiful and deadly!
Amanita Muscaria

Beauty can be deceiving, even worse it can be deadly!.
I was so happy to see these beautiful mushrooms popping out in cluster all over my backyard. I took some pictures and I even put on my desktop. They were so perfect, they come up as a white stright stem, then the top forms a rounded white ball, then it turns bright shiny orange with white evenly spaced raised spots. The ball flattens and there you have it, a perfect umbrella.
Once the romantic fascination settled, it is time to look up the facts. The beauty was just skin deep. I turned to my friend google which gave me 1,340,000 web sites in .22 sec! This beautiful on the outside turned out to be quite ugly, so much so that even bugs and worms avoid it. I guess you got to be horribly ugly for bugs and worms to avoid you. It turned out that those worms and bugs have something to teach us ! But now I know the beauty (on the long run) is always within.

Needless to say I went on destructive spree, which I am sure that I will do again once the snow melts but not before taking more pictures of this poisonous beauty. You know they are still beautiful! And beauty remains attractive. The official name of this mushroom was Amantia Muscaria and the non official one was DEATH ANGEL!

فن تقدير المرأة

دور المرأة في المجتمع هو دور مفصلي لا اختلاف عليه, لكن ما تختلف عليه المجتمعات هو تقديرالمرأة على هذا الدور. و قد يكون مستوى التقدير وأسلوبه مؤشرا لاباس به لقياس تقدم المجتمع أو تخلفه. واكتفي بهذا القدر من مادة الانشاء, ولنبدأ الحكايه القصيرة الاحداث والغزيرة في المعنى:
لا أعلم على وجه التحديد متى حدثت, فقد رواها والدي والعهدة على الراوي .
كاد حجي حسن (أبو علي )أن يطير فرحاُ حين زف اليه خبر المولود الجديد, فكما عودته أم علي جاء ذكراُ. ولم تخيب أم علي أي من اّمال حجي حسن فهذا هو المولود التاسع وكلهم ذكور!
وهنا لم يتمالك حجي حسن مشاعره وأحس أن دورها العظيم وأداها التي تفوقت فيه علي نسوان الديه جميعهن يستحق التقدير , وقد أستحقته بجدارة , وهنا قال حجي حسن كلمته التي تقطر عرفانا وأمتنانا وتقديرا لدور أم علي
